Oh, macarons, what luxurious, vibrant, and delicious French snacks they are! Macarons are one of the most popular and universally favorite baking snacks. These elegant-looking cookies are a perfect dessert for almost every event.
The soft filling and crunchy texture of macarons are quite delicious (and honestly addictive). While it is great to bake your macarons and store them before the event, storing macarons to maintain their original taste and texture might not be an easy task.
So, how should you properly store your macaroons to keep them fresh, soft, and delicious? Well, we got some great advice for you!
Keep them at the Right Temperature
Macarons can be stored both at room temperature and in the fridge. You can store macarons at room temperature for two to three days (unless they are butter creamed filled, more on this later). However, in a fridge, they can last for up to 7 days.
If you want to store your colorful snacks at room temperature, the best way is to keep them in an airtight container to avoid drying out. If you are going to put them in the fridge, you can use any plastic or glass container.
Storing The Macarons
Storing macarons mainly depends on the filling they have. If macarons have a buttercream or cream-based filling, they are not shelf-stable. These macarons should not be kept out of the fridge for longer than two to three hours. However, if the macaron filling is water-based ganache, brigadeiro filling, or jam, they can be kept at room temperature for a few days.
Storing Freshly Baked Macarons
Some people want to store their macarons right after they are baked. However, it’s important you let them cool before putting them in a refrigerator. Place your macarons on a pan and let them cool down. Don’t shift the macarons to another plate when they are hot; otherwise, they can be too soft and crack, preventing you from getting that perfect macaron texture and shape.
Once your macarons are cooled to room temperature, you can go ahead and move them to a container, which you can then place in the fridge!
Using An Airtight Container in A Room
One of the best ways to keep macarons fresh at room temperature is to store them in an airtight container. The macarons should be stored in a dry and clean container. When the container is moist or has air in it, they can become soggy and interfere with the flavor. If you place parchment paper on the base of the container, it will keep the container dry.
For shallow containers, fold up the paper's sides. Place your macarons carefully in a single layer after setting the paper. Leave a small gap between them so they won't stick together. Put the lid on tightly and store the container in a safe place.
Store In Macaron Boxes
How about getting yourself some macaron boxes? Macaron boxes are another reliable option for storing macarons at room temperature and enjoying long-lasting freshness. The boxes are quite strong and are specially made to protect the macarons. They come in different shapes, colors, and sizes to hold 2 to 12 macarons.
Macaron boxes are also an ideal option for traveling or delivering cookies to your loved ones. The design of the box prevents the macarons from sticking together. You can easily buy these boxes from a baking or kitchen store and keep them all safe and fresh.
Storing The Macarons in The Fridge
You may be concerned that storing your macarons in a cold environment will cause them to dry out, crack or ruin their perfect texture. However, some people find that storing macarons in the fridge, no matter the filling, keeps them fresher and more intact.
Make sure to take your macarons out of the fridge 20 minutes before serving and keep them in a plastic container. As soon as the macarons reach room temperature, they will be of the perfect texture and temperature, and you can serve them to your guests.
Storing Macarons in a Freezer
Another effective way to store your macarons is by freezing them. However, you need to freeze the freshly baked macarons right after they have cooled from the oven. If you are in the macaron business, you can store freshly baked macarons in the freezer before delivering them to your clients.
However, re-freezing the macarons is not a great idea as it can change the original texture of the macarons, which does not taste or feel delightful on the palate. Make sure not to freeze your macarons for more than 4 months. Storing them for longer than 4 months may cause them to dry out, crack, or possibly even spoil. (Nobody wants a spoiled macaron!)
